The best self help books in terms of psychology Part 2

Neurosis can cause considerable anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, and depression (which are a secondary character), various psychosomatic disorders.

Books from the list explain this condition and help to cope with it. But it is important to remember two things: the information itself does not cure, the need to translate knowledge into action, to the implementation of the methods and recommendations of these books. And, the second. Books cannot give a side view, restricted in ability to see the problem as a whole, cannot provide support. So often without the help of a specialist cannot do.

Books are not ranked in order of importance. Under each title and author, I give my brief personal comment why we need this book.

Arnold Lazarus “Mind’s eye”

Arnold Lazarus is venerated me not only as a recognized expert in the field of mental health, one of the leaders of the directions and is the author of effective short-term multimodal. I love it for ease of language, the simplicity and effectiveness of the methods they offer. Someone will draw the fact that Lazarus is a doctor of psychology and a Professor. But much more interesting is that it is simple and easy to practice technique that uses the power of images really help to deal with fears, anxiety, stress and depression. The images help in communicating, problems with relationships, in acquiring the confidence and peace of mind.

Richard Davidson, Sharon Begley: “How emotions drive the brain”

This book is difficult to refer to the self-help books. It is rather a synthesis of the work of nearly 30 years of research in neurophysiology and brain plasticity. In this list I included a book for two reasons. The first experimental data that it provides will allow you to take a fresh look at the nature of so called psychosomatic diseases. And, secondly, in the book there is a Chapter with specific exercises, by doing which You will be able to achieve amazing results in the field where previously it was thought that You can’t change from birth. For example, your temperament. We were taught that character, its accentuation is still amenable to correction, but the temperament cannot be changed as it is inherited genetically. However, thanks to research by R. Davidson it turns out that you can. And you can change the “trodden” for years, the neural pathways supporting your neurosis.

Blazer “Problem oriented psychotherapy”

This book you are unlikely to find in the store, but it is in electronic form. In fact, produced a book for experts, but the ideas contained in it and easy language, plus practical examples, it can help customers.

In the first place to help determine the problem. Which will provide you not work with interpretations of your problem from the representatives of different schools of psychotherapy. Not with their submissions under the “Procrustean bed” of the dogmas of the schools, not with the odd unnecessary “jungle” and “depth”, which helps to distract from problems on the process of psychotherapy, but do not solve this problem. What it my problem? this book will help you find answers to this question. It answers the question What to do with this “discovery”? However, I can warn that here just may need professional help. But you will come to psychotherapy much and with a clear purpose and ideas about what you want, and how to achieve it

“Harris, Russ. The trap of happiness. Stop worrying start living”

Quite a rare book from the representatives of the third wave of CBT. One of the few popular benefits of therapy acceptance and commitment (not to be confused with body oriented psychotherapy). Especially useful this book to those who are removing the symptoms, thinks that is still sick, neurotically trying to achieve the ideal, for those who due to various reasons and the truth is the real problem with health. And, as a consequence, this coexisting psychological problems. In many ways this book can be recommended in a couple of book 5 from the list discussed in the first part of this article.

Psychology of positive change. How to get rid of bad habits

The book by well-known representatives of the second wave CBT, where the authors formulated the basic tenets of cognitive behavioral therapy:

  • the ineffectiveness of psychoanalysis in the treatment of anxiety disorders;
  • focus on analysis of thinking and behavior helping clients is to find fix bugs in their habits to think and respond to problems certain way;
  • the authors rely on the principles of scientific experiment a theory, the hypothesis can be tested in practice myths and subjective interpretation of human nature are not useful;
  • focus on the problem focus on solving specific problems of the relationship, not to work through deep personal trauma;
  • psychotherapy is a type of training where the therapist transfers their knowledge to the client but also the therapist and client can be in the role of researchers and scientists;
  • the active role of the client in the process a mandatory element of the treatment is the homework and practical work of the client.

Giorgio Nardone “Fear, panic, a phobia. Short-term therapy”

Another book more for professionals. But decided to give her, as perfectly presented the theory of disturbing and phobic disorders, and there are two examples of working with the phenomenon of fear of fear, which often closes the circle of phobic anxious patients. Written easily, sometimes with humor, and that is not unimportant, there are examples of bypass harmful and very rigid “psychological defenses” that people forms years and is not ready from them so just give up. These protections greatly hinder the process of therapy in any approach to work through them to spend a lot of time and effort, if they are properly defined. Describes how often easy to get around them.

That’s probably all for today. There are not included several very well-known books, particularly books by David burns and Lucinda Bassett has not joined the books of the founders of CBT, Aaron Beck and albert Ellis were not included the works of creators individual areas in KPT, for example, Jeffrey young, Marches, Linehan or William Glasser. But those that got to review, after reading and applying them in practice can improve the quality of your life.
